On this tour we move slightly away from the capital to reach San Francisco de Paula, where FINCA VIGÌA, the Cuban house of Ernest Hemingway, is located.

It is a colonial-style residence built in 1886, in which the writer lived from 1939 to 1960, first renting it and then buying it in 1940. In this house Hemingway wrote some of his masterpieces, in particular “Il Vecchio e il Mare”, set right on the Caribbean island. In 2007, after a restoration of the Cuban government in collaboration with the Americans, the residence reopened to the public as a museum, it was kept as it was when the American writer lived there, with more than 9000 books on the shelves and inside there you can still find the typewriter used by Hemingway.

The house is still inhabited by numerous cats, one of the writer’s passions and in a box outside there is also EL PILAR, the boat with which Hemingway went fishing and which also hosted Fidel Castro on board, with whom Hemingway became friends.
